The Angel of Chains by Lesleigh63 The Angel of Chains by Lesleigh63
The Angel of Chains
Right-sideup, this card indicates a loss of innocence. It signifies an awareness of the deceit in others, a loss of trust but a gain in wisdom.
Upside down, this card represents a fall from grace. It signifies yielding to temptation at the cost of personal integrity.

This is for Seventh Sanctum's Tarot contest [link] The card name I generated to illustrate was - The Angel of Chains.

For the painting, I relied on some self-portrait photos by Ewiku [link] as references to paint the main figure. I use Corel-photopaint and a tablet as my tools for painting.

I'm surprised that this didn't get first place! The color scheme is a great choice for this piece. I love the detail in this... you PAINTED it?

Whoooa. o.o Don't let my angst femboy-love bias get in the way of how well-drawn this piece is.

The text detracts from the portrait a bit, and it's a little detached from the BG in my opinion. But... the color... is so amazing. Shiny chains are perfectly shiny. And I could swear his hair looks like it came out of a photograph, with every little strand drawn and given careful attention...Great work.

Between you, Morganne, and ES... this is going to be one close race. Best of luck!

(and a +fav to satiate the angsty femboy bias...!)

Thanks for the comment and fav.

I love drawing beautiful boys...

I'm so pleased you noticed the hair. I've struggled with hair in the past, but I found a great tutorial which I followed and it really helped me.

Thanks for the comment.

Never be reluctant to show your art. Just strive to make each new picture better than your last one. And for this comp, their usually looking for more than just the art - in this particular case it's also the interpretation of what the card means.

Ooh, I like how this looks like a multi-medium piece. I think its the way the textures are reacting to eachother. The soft elements in the back work their way to the sharper stuff in the foreground. Its a really nice contrast.

Thanks. I wanted a soft bluriness to the skin and a hard sharpness to the chains and jewellery. I tried to get the wings, wrap and hair to fill in the steps from soft to hard.
I used a photo for the background architecture, tinting it blue to contrast with the wings.

Must be the time to paint fallen angels/demons.

Even odder another painter used the same reference pic I used to paint a fallen angel - I thought it was weird that we both imagined the same thing when we looked at that photo.
